Are you bilingual/biliterate in an Asian language? We’re community volunteers in the SGV looking to build a pool of fluent speakers and writers of various Asian languages in the service of language justice for progressive causes such as community safety, healthcare reform and housing rights.
What is language justice? Being able to listen to, discuss, and participate in civic life in the broadest possible way speaking the language you are most comfortable speaking.
Why is this urgent? ICE and human traffickers are abducting neighbors from our communities. MAGA Chinese in the largest Asian American area in the U.S.A., the San Gabriel Valley, are fostering anti-Black divisions in the region and siding with policies that hurt working-class families of all nationalities. To build solidarity, we need to bridge cultural divides and educate more people about our distinct histories and share lessons in our common fights for equality and against discrimination.
The language justice work we envision would involve translation of flyers, informational materials, articles, social media graphics, educational initiatives and live event translation work. Ideally, we eventually want to finance this work. In whatever capacity you assist with this effort, anything would be helpful!
